George W. Ball was mayor of Iowa City from 1905 to 1909, and an Iowa Senator from 1900-1902. According to the 1910 Census, George Ball resided at 429 North Clinton Street. His wife was named Estella and had two children, Walter M (also a lawyer, and an abstractor) and George W. Jr., another lawyer, who lived with his wife Maud and her mother. A servant, Marie Linder, also resided with George Ball’s family.
The attached ad was published in the Iowa City Daily Press on July 12, 1904.

Born near Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, June 7, 1847. He spent his youth on his father's farm in Jefferson County, attended common school, and Wesleyan University, Mt. Pleasant, graduating in 1867. He also graduated from the law department of the State University of Iowa in 1869. He practiced law a short time in Des Moines and in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, and then in Chicago, but in November, 1874, he removed to Iowa City and formed a partnership with Charles Baker, which continued until Mr. Baker's death in 1910. Then he formed a partnership with his son, George W. Ball, Jr. In 1885 he was elected representative and served in the Twenty-first General Assembly. He was county attorney of Johnson County for four years, 1893 to 1896. In 1899 he was elected senator and served in the Twenty-eight and Twenty-ninth General Assemblies and was mayor of Iowa City from 1905 to 1909. He was vice president of the First National Bank of Iowa City. He was a member of the board of curators of the State Historical Society. He was prominent in the different branches of Masonry, and was grand master of the Grand Lodge of Iowa two terms, 1895 and 1896. An ad in the 1908 City Directory promotes learning shorthand, bookkeeping, typewriting, commercial law and arithmetic, telegraphy, mimeographing, and orthography.

Otto H. Fink ran the cigar store at St. James Hotel. His home address is listed as 730 Iowa Avenue in the 1908 City Directory. His wife was named Margaret M. and they had two sons named John G. and Guy S. He was born about 1865, according to the 1910 Census. John G. was listed as a salesman in the cigar store, and his wife was named Ada. The 1911 City Directory also lists Guy S. as a clerk in the cigar store. This directory lists “Cigars Cigaretts Tobacco and Pipes, [sic] 4 South Clinton Street”. The advertisement at the top of the page reads “The Most Complete Line of Cigarettes in the State/O.H. Fink Iowa City, Iowa.”

The 1911 directory lists “Jeweler Optician Pianos Organs Music and Musical Merchandise” next to his name. May’s name is spelled Mae in this directory.

The 1909 City Directory lists him at Garden and Friendship. The company began as W. F. Main Co. in 1888. He later sold the business and it was renamed Puritan Mfg. Co. The factory was on Friendship Street. The 1909 City Directory lists him at Garden and Friendship. According to the 1910 Census, his wife was named Jeanette R., and they had two daughters, Ruth J. and Mary L. He was born about 1860 in Minnesota.
The attached article was published in the Iowa City Daily Press on April 25, 1905. The bankruptcy article comes from the June 6, 1911, issue of the Iowa City Citizen. The Iowa State Press published the "East Iowa City" article on April 13, 1899.

His wife was named Anna B. and they had two children, Melba and Aileen. Two roomers also lived with them, Fay Gay and Mabel Rooeyfrif. An ad at the end of the 1911 City Directory lists his business at 5 and 6 Phoenix Block.
