Description

The June 2009 issue of Iowa City's arts and culture magazine, Little Village, celebrated Pride month by covering LGBTQ+ lives affected by the then-recent Iowa Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage. Among these features was a Iowa Civil Rights timeline written by Andrew Sherburne with an introduction by Melody Dworak. The timeline highlights years Iowans gained legal protections against various kinds of discrimination.

The entire June 2009 issue can be downloaded from the University of Iowa Libraries institutional repository.

Little Village has been in print since 2001 and its current publisher is Matthew Steele. Reproduction inquiries can be emailed to Publisher@LittleVillageMag.com.

<![CDATA[Century Suppers]]> https://history.icpl.org/items/show/2915

Description

From the Foreward: In 1986, the Iowa City Public Library Foundation followed in the footsteps of the founders of the Iowa City Public Library who originally raised the funds necessary for our Library. Realizing the importance of our free public library system, the Library Foundation began a fund drive to ensure the library's continued excellence. The Centennial Endowment Fund Drive was created to raise $1,000,000 by 1996, the centennial of the founding of the Iowa City Public Library, to fund an endowment which will enhance the programs and collections of the library.

On April 12, 1986, the Library Foundation held a gala to kick off the Endowment Fund Drive. In keeping with the memory of our founders, this evening was a celebration of our past. All guests at the black-tie gala were invited to
join in the spirit by dressing in turn-of-the-century costumes. The reception held at the Public Library was a colorful evening with different events held throughout the many areas of the building. Guests enjoyed the entertainment while sipping wine and enjoying hors d'oeuvres.

After the reception, dinners were held in many of the historic homes of Iowa City which were in existence in 1896, when the first fund raising began. Each host chose a literary theme around which the meal and the evening were centered.

Century Suppers was created from the dinners held that evening. It is intended to entertain, inform and help you to experience the special evening of April 12. As editors, we take credit only for the arrangement. The text describing the houses was written by Robert Alexander; the information about the two library buildings was provided by Hansen Lind Meyer Architects; the wines were selected by John Gillespie of Claret and Friends; and the menus and recipes were provided by the generous hosts and cooks for that evening. All profits will benefit the library's Centennial Endowment Fund. Our thanks to those who helped.

Description

Brothers and sisters! It is time once again to visit that dark pit of crimes historical and transgressions allegorical; to trespass back in time to uncover the original (and the not so original) sins of Iowa's forefather's and mothers. Can I get an amen? Our sermon comes from the gospel of Iowa City's first (and most scandalous) Presbyterian minister: Michael Hummer.
Part two of three: In Late summer, 1848, only weeks after his mystic mumbo-jumbo got him fired from hist post as Iowa City's first Presbyterian Minister, Michael Hummer returned with a ladder, a horse, a wagon, and his friend, Dr. J.W. Margrave. Together they planned to steel the bell from the Presbyterian Church. Hummer figured it belonged to him--after all, he'd raised the bell fund...
Part three of three. OK, a quick recap: After being fired fro his post as Iowa City's First Presbyterian Minister, Michael Hummer moved to Keokuk to start a spiritualistic temple. Then, to spite his former congregation (who still owed him $650 in back pay), Hummer returned to Iowa City in the late summer 1848 to steal the bell from his old church to install in his new one. A crowd halted the theft and hid the bell in the waters of the Iowa River--but when they returned, the bell had disappeared!

<![CDATA[Stage Ready]]> https://history.icpl.org/items/show/2879

Description

One of eight murals created in 1934 by Mildred Pelzer that depict historic scenes of Iowa City. The paintings were commissioned by the Jefferson Hotel and graced the lobby of the hotel located on the corner of Washington and Dubuque streets for many years before they were removed for renovation and never put back up.

“Stage Ready” is the sixth mural in the series and depicts the impending departure of a stage coach in Iowa City circa. 1855, as reported in Bob Hibbs's "Historic Scenes by Mildred Pelzer 1934." The original brochure that accompanied the mural's dedication describes the scene in this manner: “Band boxes and carpet bags were loaded on top and nine or ten persons wedged inside the four-horse Concord coach. The fare to Des Moines was $10 and at one tavern a breakfast of fried pork, dry bread, and spring water cost $.50. Note the driver--the horses are being changed, and the frontier minister is bidding his farewells. Along the stage route frequent stops were made to water the horses and ‘to brandy the gentlemen.’”

The painting is temporarily on display (May 2017-August 2018) at the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center while its permanent home, Longfellow Elementary School, is undergoing renovation.

The painting is “oil on canvas” and measures approximately four feet high by twelve feet wide.

This digital photograph of the painting was taken by Cheryll Clamon.

“Railroad Arrives” is the seventh mural in the series and depicts the January 1, 1856 completion of a railroad connection between the Mississippi River and Iowa City as reported in Bob Hibbs's "Historic Scenes by Mildred Pelzer 1934." The story behind the event depicted adds high drama to the scene as described in the dedication brochure: “’The Railroad Comes to Iowa City’ is an animated scene in a temperature of -25 degrees. The road was to receive a bonus of $50,000 if it could be brought to the Iowa City depot on or before January 1, 1956. On New Year’s Eve the engine was still a thousand feet from the goal. Peter A. Dey and LeGrand Byington are urging the men to win the bonus. With only a few hours left, the engine froze up and was then pushed and pried on the track to the depot. The bells of the city pealed triumphantly.”

The painting is temporarily on display (May 2017-August 2018) at the Iowa City Public Library while its permanent home, Longfellow Elementary School, is undergoing renovation.

The painting is “oil on canvas” and measures approximately four feet high by twelve feet wide.

This digital photograph of the painting was taken by Cheryll Clamon.
