Description
An account of the resource
This collection represents a sample of the First Presbyterian Church's archive of materials from throughout its history. The Church celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2015, culminating in events over the weekend of September 11-13, 2015. The ICPL Digital History Project is very excited to be able to share these materials with community, and extends its thanks to the Church, and Dwight Miller, for its willing collaboration and assistance.
Please join us in congratulating the Church on its anniversary! These items tell part of the story of the Church, but also of our community; you'll find the names of many people who were important to the founding and building of Iowa City, along with names and stories related to the congregation and city at large.
We hope you enjoy the collection. If you have any information that you'd like to share about the items here, please use the comments box at the bottom of every page, or contact csmith@icpl.org or mdworak@icpl.org

Description
An account of the resource
A list of people who pledged to pay money for a bell for the North Presbyterian Church. The North Presbyterian Church was the First Presbyterian Church, and was located where Old Brick is. The church building that stood in 1855 was destroyed by fire on May 19, 1856. Rev. F.A. Shearer was pastor at this time.
The Church’s designation as ‘North’ differentiates it from the New School Presbyterian Church, formally called the First Constitutional Presbyterian Church of Iowa City, which was located on the south side of Burlington Street, between Clinton and S. Capitol streets. This building was also referred to as the Stone Church.

Cross Bill filed by the Board of Trustees, in response to Rev. Hummer’s Bill of Complaint against them. The Cross Bill has several questions that the Board compels the Court to have Rev. Hummer address, and also asks the Court to rule against Rev. Hummer and his Bill.
An addendum dated 03/19/1851 states that, in response to the Cross Bill, Rev. Hummer’s attorney W. G. Woodward Esq. appears in court to state that Rev. Hummer has been “found a monomaniac” by a jury in the probate court of Lee County, Iowa. He further states that three men have named guardians of Rev. Hummer’s person and belongings, and as such, their names should be substituted for Rev. Hummer’s in the Cross Bill.

Interior of the roof support structure. The bell-shaped roof of this structure is very unique for a barn construction. Eight laminated ribs provide the main support for this structure. The beams connect all the way up to the barn’s cupola in the center. Built in 1883. Restored by Rich Tyler.

Description
An account of the resource
Interior of main barn area. This barn was constructed by Frank Longerbeam in 1883 for Joshua Secrest, a farmer and the owner of the property. It was built to house livestock and store hay and straw. The barn’s structure is quite unusually large, measuring 75 feet high with a diameter of 80 feet, necessary for the large size of Secrest’s farm, which was an area of 520 acres. Because of the age and uniqueness of this structure, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Built in 1883. Restored by Rich Tyler.
