C.O.D. Steam Laundry Building, 1897
Iowa City Public Library (Iowa City, Iowa)
The first ICPL was on the second floor of the C.O.D. Steam Laundry building at 211 Iowa Ave. opening its doors on Thursday January 21, 1897. The library initially employed one librarian and held a total of 1,300 books. Public outcry for more positive spaces for Iowa City's youth was a major catalyst in the public library's inception.

Cannon & Pratt Building, 1901
Iowa City Public Library (Iowa City, Iowa)
The second location for the ICPL was at 212 East College Street in the Cannon & Pratt building opening in June of 1901. Today most of this site is occupied by the present public library building. While rent at this new location was an additional $125 per year, additional space, improved lighting, and more desirable library quarters were among the reasons for the move.

Building Workers 1, Iowa City Public Library, 1904
Iowa City Public Library (Iowa City, Iowa)
Workers undergoing excavation work on Iowa City's Carnegie Library, which began construction in the summer of 1903. The Carnegie Library at 212 South Linn Street opened its doors on Thursday, October 27, 1904. Funds for the construction of this building were provided by a $35,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie.
The portico on the house in the background was saved when that house was torn down. It was moved to a house at 606 S. Johnson street, where it still stands as of May 2013.

Iowa City Carnegie Library Addition, 1963
Iowa City Public Library (Iowa City, Iowa)
An addition of 14,000 square-feet was built onto the Carnegie building and dedicated on Sunday, November 10, 1963. The need for more library space was primarily attributed to an increased population and a record-breaking amount of library circulation. When completed, this addition enclosed the east side of the original building entirely.

Iowa City Public Library Building, 1981
Iowa City Public Library (Iowa City, Iowa)
The ICPL at 123 South Linn Street began construction in October 1979 and opened its doors to the public on June 14, 1981 after hundreds of volunteers moved all of the library materials across the street. Crowded conditions in the Carnegie Library location were a major factor in the construction of the new location. Around this time, major technological changes were being introduced to ICPL. The card catalog was eventually closed and a new computer-assisted circulation system was put into place.

Building the Library, 2004
Iowa City Public Library (Iowa City, Iowa)
After more than two years of construction the doors opened to the new building June 12, 2004. The current ICPL location is an expansion and renovation of the 1981 building, its current space nearly double that of the original. A successful November 2000 bond referendum vote helped in funding this project. The design of the current building, with its tall windows and additional seating, is a marked change from the earlier building. Self-check features were also installed during this building's renovation.
