Description
An account of the resource
This collection represents a sample of the First Presbyterian Church's archive of materials from throughout its history. The Church celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2015, culminating in events over the weekend of September 11-13, 2015. The ICPL Digital History Project is very excited to be able to share these materials with community, and extends its thanks to the Church, and Dwight Miller, for its willing collaboration and assistance.
Please join us in congratulating the Church on its anniversary!
These items tell part of the story of the Church, but also of our community; you'll find the names of many people who were important to the founding and building of Iowa City, along with names and stories related to the congregation and city at large.
We hope you enjoy the collection. If you have any information that you'd like to share about the items here, please use the comments box at the bottom of every page, or contact csmith@icpl.org or mdworak@icpl.org

Description
An account of the resource
An expense ledger kept by Rev. Michael Hummer from mid-1845 to 1847. The ledger details the amounts paid for various materials and services related to building a church. Rev. Hummer was the first pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and had been appointed by the Trustees with securing funds for, and overseeing the building of, the first Church building. Rev. Hummer was pastor from 1841-1848; the Church structure was incomplete at the time of his departure.
The ledger is written in tête-bêche style, i.e., from both covers and contents written from the back are upside down from those written from the front. The first dated page from the front cover is dated May, 1845 and the first page from the back cover is dated June, 1845.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Theodore Sanxay to Rev. Michael Hummer. The letter is dated June 6, 1844, and is addressed to Rev. Hummer in New York. It speaks of the ongoing construction of the Church and materials for it, so it seems likely that this was during one of Rev. Hummer's trips out east to raise funds.
Theodore Sanxay was a founding member of the Church, and served on its Board of Trustees.
