In the fall of 1922, the Iowa City Municipal Airport was designated by the U.S. Postal Service as the eastern terminus for air mail service. Planes from Chicago would stop in Iowa City during their regular Chicago to San Francisco routes. Most of these Iowa City stops were during the nighttime hours.

This was additionally one of the very first flights over the state of Iowa. Soon afterwards, the land that would soon become the Iowa City Municipal Airport became popular as a landing strip for local pilots, attracted to the ease of landing due to the area
