U.S. Air Mail plane, 1922
In October 1910, Captain Thomas Baldwin, with his aircraft Red Devil, conducted the first flight over Iowa City at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. This was additionally one of the very first flights over the state of Iowa. Soon afterwards, the land that would soon become the Iowa City Municipal Airport became popular as a landing strip for local pilots, attracted to the ease of landing due to the area
